Poverty Recipe For GBV, Forums
Khonsolo Women's Forum, a Mzimba based organization under Action Aid Malawi says poverty remains a major cause of gender based violence among women and children in the area of Inkosi Khonsolo in Mzimba district.
The forum's executive director, Joyce Mwale, made the sentiments Wednesday during a training session aimed at empowering women to start small businesses and improve their livelihoods.
Said Mwale," Women around this area face a lot of violence in their families especially when it comes to utilizing proceeds from farming the main do not let them have any say in how the money is used."
Apart from economic violence, Mwale said women are also being deprived the right to own land mainly due to the Ngoni cultural beliefs.
Chikondi Chisale a woman from Kanjuchi in the same area of Inkosi Khonsolo said being sidelined in the use of resources has a psychological effect on their lives.
Said Chisale, "During the rainy season, we work very well with our husbands in the field but during the time of selling the produce some husbands run away with the money spending it on beer and other women, this leaves affects us psychologically as there is no money towards the education of our children."
This is a common issue in many parts of Malawi, where women's economic empowerment is crucial in preventing gender-based violence.
To address these economic hardships, Mightwell Mtonga, a social welfare officer, encouraged women to venture into small businesses by accessing micro loans or utilizing village savings and loans groups.
Mulumuzana Bisa Phiri said as traditional leaders they will facilitate the formation of bylaws in trying to end GBV in the area.
Said Mulumuzana Phiri," we understand the concerns women are raising and indeed such things are happening around the area hence as leaders we will try to formulate bylaws to deter such tendencies which infringe on the rights of women."
Action Aid Malawi has been working to address these issues through various initiatives in the area of Inkosi Khonsolo in Mzimba through women forums and youth groups among others mainly to eliminate violence against women and girls.
