The Malawi Congress Party and the UTM have distanced themselves from a social media campaign that is suggesting an alliance between the two parties.

Spokespersons for both MCP Maurice Munthali and UTM Joseph Chidanti Malunga say they do not know about the campaign, and that it is not coming from either of the parties.

Lately, social media platforms have been awash with messages that are suggesting a possible alliance between the MCP and UTM.

But MCP spokesperson Maurice Munthali says the party has seen the campaign on the social media platforms, and is treating the campaign as social media talk.

“That is not coming from the MCP. We have seen the messages on social platforms and we are treating it a mere social media talk. If something was put on the table, then the party would discuss,” said Munthali.

UTM spokesperson Dr. Joseph Chidanti Malunga said the party is not aware of any alliance.

Said Chidanti Malunga, “We are not aware of it. Well, I cannot comment on something that the party knows nothing about.”

Political commentator Victor Chipofya feels that there is no possibility of an alliance due to leaders’ personal egos.

“Having an alliance means someone has to be a running mate, so but it is not possible for the two parties to have an alliance due to personal egos. Look at the MCP, it’s been around for a long time with a large following,” said Chipofya.

He adds, “On the other hand, the UTM has managed to woo over one million votes in a period of 9 months.”

The two parties are contesting May 21 2019 presidential poll results in court for alleged manipulation of the results.
