Malawian Lady Stranded in Eswatini, Suspected Trafficking Survivor

A young Malawian lady is said to be bedridden in a hospital in Eswatini after she was found loitering in the streets of Manzini, a suspected survivor of human trafficking away from home in the country formerly called Swaziland.

Another Malawian living in Eswatini, Harris Kamanga, the young lady is answering to the name Moda Chunga and she claims to come from Chiyuni Village in Mzimba district.

"The lady was foundĀ  by police along the streets of Manzini here in Eswatini and was taken to a psychiatric hospital," Kamanga told Zodiak Online adding that he came to know about her from a Rwandese friend who reached out for help as the lady and her guardians could not communicate due to language barrier.

Kamanga says the lady appears disturbed psychologically unsound as she cannot remember a lot of things including how she found herself in Eswatini.

"We suspect she was trafficked. I have been in tough with the Maputo Malawi, Embassy to help in locating the home of the young woman," Kamanga said.

In a social media post, Kamanga has appealed to Malawians of good will to help out in whatever way they can.

We called Rejoice Shumba spokesperson of the ministry of Foreign Affairs but she said she needed time to provide appropriate responses on the matter.
