President Peter Mutharika has reiterated his wish for a round table discussion with leaders of opposition political parties on the current political impasse.

The president said this on Friday at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe Friday when he was leaving the country for the United Kingdom (UK) to attend the 2020 UK-Africa Investment Summit.

“Let me also urge Malawians to stop mass demonstrations. I think the point has been made. We have all heard their voice. It is now time to join hands and stop destroying our nation.

“I am ready to talk to the opposition to make sure there is no chaos in the country. Let us all join hands to build the nation,” he said.

Mutharika’s remarks come just a day after human Rights Defenders Coalition held nationwide demonstrations against Dr. Jane Ansah, chairperson of Malawi Electoral Commission, which mostly ended in violence.

The Summit will be held on Monday and the president said “on Tuesday, there are some other things I want to do; meeting various companies and will have a lecture at University of London on Wednesday.

“That is a privilege for Malawi. We have fourteen companies from Malawi, both public and private, are coming there to showcase Malawi.

“I will be giving a keynote address trying to outline Malawi; possibilities of Malawi; challenges and opportunities that companies can find in Malawi. So it is an important meeting for Malawi,” he said.
