The two-week long nation-wide strike by teachers who were pushing, in solidarity, for payment of December 2019 salaries for some 7,000 teachers who were struck out of the government pay roll for non-production of the national identity card.

In a statement issued by the Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) and signed for by President Willie Malimba and Secretary General Charles Kumchenga says the industrial action has been suspended because government has paid the teachers.

“Government has deposited the December 2019 salaries in the accounts of the affected teachers. TUM has proved this and many teachers have confirmed it,” said Kumchenga.

The union, however, acknowledges that some teachers have yet to receive the salaries. For these, it reads, those who shall still not have received the funds by 28th January, 2020 should report to their District Education Managers (DEMs) or District Commissioners (DCs).

“TUM wishes to thank all teachers who participated positively during this national wide strike.

“In this regard, Teachers Union of Malawi is requesting all teachers and lecturers to resume their duties starting from Monday the 27th of January, 2020,” reads the statement.

The two-week long strike turned violent when frustrated learners and parents in some districts took to the streets to help force government resolve the misunderstanding.
