Lilongwe Teachers’ Training College Students Protest Unpaid Allowances
Teacher trainees at Lilongwe Teachers’ Training College run amuck Monday morning when police fired teargas to disperse an otherwise peaceful assembly.
The student were protesting unpaid allowances and pushing their authorities to speedily respond to their inquiry.
The students claim are supposed to receive 20,000 Kwacha each month as teaching practice training allowance but it’s now two months after the last they were paid.
But police moved-in to thwart an otherwise peaceful demonstration.
One student, Billy Kachedwa, said the students tried in vain to engage college management over the issue hence the mass action.
“This is the fourth week since we came back and there is no communication about our teaching practice allowance which we were supposed to receive when we are at the teaching practice schools.
“Now they have a balance which they have to square. Unfortunately, they have stayed quite,” he said.
Zodiak has established that a total of 702 students have not received the allowances for November and December.
College management has been reluctant to comment on the matter.
