CDEDI Challenges LC, SKC, APM Ahead of ConCourt Verdict
The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development-CDEDI-says Malawi’ three top political leaders need to tread carefully ensuring they are in the forefront preaching genuine peace among their followers now, during and after court verdict.
CDEDI, a new organization led by Silvester Namiwa, who resigned 2019 as officer in the state house press office, has joined a quartet of civil rights organizations urging political party leaders desist from perpetrating disputes around this volatile period.
“Our message is simple, our leaders should put aside politics and serve the interest of the country. We believe the courts will deliver a just ruling based on the evidence and should the other side feel justice has not been done then they should feel free to appeal by following proper channels and refraining from violence,” he said.
Namiwa said this when CDEDI addressed the media in Lilongwe Wednesday.
He said it was imperative for all parties to the case to accept the court ruling.
The organization says is optimistic that citizens of Malawi will also act responsibly and that all political leaders would rise above partisan politics for common good.
Namiwa said it was encouraging that religious leaders are preaching peace in all communities and “hopefully they will continue doing so” around time of the verdict.
The Malawi Electoral Commission-MEC-declared DPP candidate Peter Mutharika as winner in the 2019 presidential election. His contenders; UTM president Saulos Chilima and his MCP counterpart Lazarus Chakwera disputed this in court.
The Constitutional Court has set Monday 3rd February as day of judgment.
