UTM president Dr. Saulos Chilima is pressing for immediate resignation of Malawi Electoral Commission chairperson, Dr. Jane Ansah, and all MEC commissioners following the nullification of the May 21, 2019 presidential election.

Dr. Chilima made the demand at a media briefing he held at the party’s offices in Lilongwe Wednesday morning.

The UTM leader, who has been reinstated as the country’s vice president, added that the Monday judgment, state that the electoral body was incompetent to run fair and credible elections.

“This is why we demand here and today that they, together with the Chief Elections Officer and all senior members of management should immediately resign and vacate their offices,” said Dr.Chilima.

Chilima also added that the nullification of the May 21, 2020 presidential poll was not victory for the petitioners alone but Malawians as a whole.

"This victory does not belong to the petitioners alone or their respective parties and supporters alone, it is a victory for all patriots. It is a victory for all those women and young people who braved the elements, standing all for hours on end to cast their vote,” explained Dr.Chilima.

On the probability of his party entering into an electoral alliance with other political parties, the UTM leader said while the party was keen on coalitions, the most important issue was to look at the common good of the citizenry other prioritizing leadership positions in such alliances.
