Visiting Brazilian Activist who is on a 11, 500 kilometers tour in Africa on foot to raise awareness on disability rights has expressed concern with the status of infrastructure in Malawi which he says are not disability friendly.

Lion Jose Castro has asked authorities to enforce laws that mandate all property owners to ensure their structures are disability friendly.

"People with disabilities fail to access public places because they are not accessible. Our places, towns, offices and roads are not disability friendly so we need to respect their dignity as humans, “he said.

Lion Castro says his advocacy is to ensure that the society treat people with disabilities with equity to make the Earth a better place for everybody.

He arrived in the country a week ago and has already been to Lilongwe, Mchinji and Kasungu as part of raising the awareness.

While in Kasungu, Castro visited Chilanga School for the blind where he planted trees alongside Kasungu Lions Club members on Sunday.

"We are more delighted to host him in Kasungu as part of the campaign.  Truly, we need to pull up our socks as a community and   a country to support people with disabilities to enjoy their rights, "said Lion Masiye Muhiwa, President of Kasungu Lions club.

Muhiwa said the visit has motivated them to engage an extra gear in promoting rights of disabled people as Lions.

Castro’s tour started from South Africa on November 3, 2019 and is expected to end in Egypt, on December 3, 2020.

So far he has covered over 3800 kilometres through South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zambia and Malawi. From Malawi, he will proceeding to Tanzania.
