Kotanna Murder Suspects Out on Bail

The High Court in Lilongwe on Tuesday released on bail four suspects in the murder of the young lady Kotanna Chidyaonga in January after satisfying all bail conditions.

The suspects Timothy Mtilosanje who was boyfriend to the girl, Diana Bhagwanji, Gilbert Kamaliza and Ekari Chawaza were granted bail on Friday last week but remained at Maula Prison pending examination of bail sureties.

High Court Judge Fiona Mwale on Friday ordered the four to provide two non-cash sureties bonded at 5 million Kwacha each, cash bail bond of 1 million kwacha each to secure the bail.

The suspects were also told to surrender their travel documents and report to Lilongwe Police Station every Fridays. They are also required to seek authorization from Officer In-Charge for Lilongwe Police Station each time they want to move out of Lilongwe City, to not communicate with relatives of the deceased and interfere with investigations.

The court is yet to set date for commencement of trial.

The case was committed to High Court from magistrate court early this Month.

Late Kotanna Chidyawonga died on the night of 3 to 4 January 2020.

An autopsy report by pathologist Dr. Charles Dzamalala revealed death was due to poisonous drug called termeck. But families of the suspects are disputing this.
