Analyst Question Creation of New Ministry
Social Commentator Rafiq Hajat, has questioned the creation of a new Ministry which will serve as the Ministry of Disaster management and Public events.
According to a letter issued by Chief Secretary to the Government Lloyd Muhara which Zodiak Online has seen, President Peter Mutharika gave a directive that by 12 February 2020 a new Ministry of Disaster Management and Public Events be created.
However, governance expert Rafiq Hajat noted that creation of an additional ministry is questionable, especially at a time when the country's political environment is uncertain.
“Introduction of this ministry is questionable and the president has to explain, normally ministries are created to address certain needs so this fresh ministry is bringing questions as to what’s going on especially under the current political circumstances,” he said.
Hajat further said even though the president has the authority to create ministries, formation of the new ministry is a political move.
“The creation of a ministry of this nature is not crucial and it has profound implications on the national budget,” he added.
The new ministry has beefed the number of cabinet ministries to 17.
Despite the new creation, it is still not known who will be appointed the Ministerial Position.
Initially, the Department of Disaster and Management Affairs-DODMA, was under the office of the vice president, and this means the VP will operate without a cabinet portfolio.
