Malawi to Quarantine Travelers

Malawi has named 19 countries whose travelers will be quarantined for 14 days upon arrival in the country in the wake of the Coronavirus.

There is no confirmed corona virus case in Malawi at the moment but citizens continue to raise concerns about weaknesses in the country’s entry points and the health system to detect and contain any outbreak.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Health and Population, as one way of strengthening surveillance and testing system travelers from red zoned countries namely China, Italy, Islamic Republic of Iran, Republic of Korea, Germany, France, Spain, United States of America, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Norway, Belgium, Austria, Japan, Greece and Finland will be quarantined for 14 days.

Part of the statement says the quarantined will later be moved to an institutional isolation facility for treatment should they be found positive or in the event that they develop signs and symptoms of the virus.

As of yesterday, South Africa had reported 61 confirmed cases of people infected with the virus a development which South African president Cyril Ramaphosa declared the spread of the virus as a national state of disaster.

The South African government has imposed a travel ban on the high risk countries, banned Gatherings of more than 100 people, closed schools among other efforts of containing spread of the virus.

More than 6500 people have died and over 162,000 people have tested positive across the globe.
