RFA Estimates K1.4 Billion in Road Tolling

The Roads Fund Administration (RFA) says they are estimating to be collecting 1.4 Billion Kwacha per year in road tolling once the yet to be constructed Toll Plaza completes in September at Chingeni in Ntcheu.

RFA, Chief Executive Officer, Stewart Malata told Zodiak Online that currently they are managing to fund 50% of road project maintenances submitted by Roads Authority due to inadequate of fuel levy which they rely on.

"We are sitting on risk whereby we are relying much on fuel levy and not adequate to fund road maintances in the country, road tolling is ideal to at least manage the maintainces,"said Malata.

Malata said about 2 Billion Kwacha will be used in constructing the Chingeni Toll Plaza.

Malata made the revelations in Ntcheu when Parliamentary Committee on Transport and Public Infrastructure visited Chingeni Toll Plaza project site.

Parliamentary Committee on Transport and Public Infrastructure Chairperson, Robert Mwina says the road tolling is a step towards ensuring improved road network in the country.

"With reports emerging that our roads are failing to be maintained due a lack of adequate fund, as a committee we fully support the initiative for an improve road network," he said.

RFA has spent 66 Million Kwacha in compensation and resettlement of people affeced by the Toll Plaza project in Ntcheu with construction expected to start next month, this according to RFA.

Other small tollgates will be constructed in selected busy roads in Mangochi, Karonga, Dedza and Mwanza among others.
