Chakwera, Chilima Talk Unity in Alliance
The Malawi Congress Party and the UTM have finally put pen to paper to an understanding on an electoral alliance leading to fresh presidential election as ordered by the constitutional court.
MCP president Dr. Lazarus Chakwera brought in Peoples Party president Dr. Joyce Banda as witness to the understanding while UTM president Dr. Saulos Chilima had Aford’s Enock Chihana
Chilima greeted the large gathering using MCP slogan. And Chakwera used UTM slogan too when they addressed people at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Lilongwe.
“The journey has just began. Today is a memorable day in the history of this country. We have signed this agreement to ensure we win this fresh election.
“Today God is speaking to us as citizens of this country. Each one of us has made a sacrifice. That sacrifice has not been in vain. The ultimate price is coming ahead. UTM is not ending. MCP is not ending…All the alliance partners are not ending.
“We have just come together to remove those who are messing up this country. We want to put our heads together to redeem this country….The alliance is for the interest of the nation. It is not an alliance for two people, or a region or a tribe…it is an alliance for all the people of Malawi…
“Future generations will look back to this day and appreciate the impact of what we are doing today. That may be years to come. Let’s thank God for all this what is happening,” Chilima said urging all followers to accept the leader of the alliance when he is unveiled at a later stage.
When he took the podium, Chakwera said: “Today has shown that change has come to Malawi. If you do not wish to be part of the change, you will not change this course. If you voted in May last year and you are angry that a thief stole it, if you were trying to remove Jane Ansah in the streets, then this alliance is yours,” he said adding that “whatever anybody wants, elections are on”.
He named president Peter Mutharika as having waged war ‘he cannot win’ against parliament.
Chakwera took the occasion to thank his party First Vice President Sidik Mia for paving way to allow for the alliance agreement to bear fruit saying this was “rare demonstration of patriotism.
“I thank Sidik Mia. He is a special person. Some people wanted to divide us. I take hats off for him. He has humbled himself in ways unimaginable. He has spoken out publicly in support of a progressive nation. This is a war for Malawians and only Malawians can win,” he said.
Earlier on, Chilima cautioned the alliance partners against going forward with grudges for past mistakes. He also hinted that the contents of the alliance agreement would be made public soon.
Chilima claimed that President Mutharika is forcing telecom companies to give them networks so that he can be spying on citizens “who have the right to privacy”.
The alliance follows weeks of candid political discussions between two political ideologies.
Thousands of followers of the two parties Thursday morning took to the streets of Lilongwe city in a march that begun from Civo Stadium through OLD Town and Biwi and Kawale townships before they converged on Kamuzu Institute for Sports where the grand ceremony is to take place.
