President Peter Mutharika has departed from his pledge to have a lean cabinet and has appointed 32 member-team which observers say is prepositioning for the fresh Presidential election scheduled for May 19.

The cabinet was released Thursday evening and conspicuously missing on the list is former Natural Resources Minister Bintony Kutsaira who has also been replaced as party regional governor for the central region.

Reacting to the new cabinet, gender and youth advocates argue the new list of cabinet ministers lack aspect of inclusion.

Emma Kaliya, a gender activist says appointing 7 women only is sad in achieving several signatories that the country made in ensuring that there is inclusion of women in key positions.

“We are equally concerned that for so long women have been left out in key positions. Their inclusion is key in ensuring that this country develops” said Kaliya.

On the other hand, Youth and Society (YAS), an organization that advocate for youth inclusion says the cabinet has zero inclusion of youth.

Charles Kajoloweka is Executive Director of YAS says “According to the definition of bracket of youth, in the new cabinet list, there are no youth. This is very worrisome” said Kajoloweka.

The new cabinet include new faces of DPP Secretary General Grezedder Jeffrey, UDF president Atupele Muluzi, UDF vice president Lillian Patel, Kamlepo Kaluwa, Werani Chilenga and former Speaker, Henry Chimunthu Banda.
