Military Hospital Construction Project in Limbo

Uncertainty hovers around construction of a Military Hospital in the country, an idea that was hatched following recommendations by a commission of inquiry into the death of Former President Bingu wa Mutharika some eight years ago.

In the report, the commission observed that referring a Head of State to a public hospital as was the case with late Bingu wa Mutharika, compromised the president’s security and privacy.

Years down the line, there is little progress on the ground.

Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Defense, Bright Kumwembe has however told Zodiak Online that the design for the hospital will be finalized soon.

"Government is currently looking for resources for the project and we are upbeat that the construction will commence next financial year,” said Kumwembe.

Health Rights Activist Maziko Matemba says the absence of the hospital in the country continues to drain country’s taxpayers’ money.

"Our central hospitals are overwhelmed and government has to prioritize the project by allocating funds in the 2020/2021 budget," said Matemba.

Apart from the Military Hospital, government also has plans in the pipeline to construct another hospital at Capital Hill for civil servants.

The project however stalled at window level.
