The Lilongwe City Council has ventured into a sweeping and spray exercise in some of the city’s markets, aimed at disinfecting public places as worry of the spraid of Coronavirus continues.

On Sunday, a 12-man team was on the ground, spraying chemicals in Lilongwe Main, Tsoka and Lizulu Markets, before undertaking the campaign in all the markets in its jurisdiction.

Deputy Director of Health Responsible for Cleansing Services Catherine Kunje said the council will be carrying out this operation in the said markets every Sunday.

“We will be spraying in these three markets every Sunday. Actually we have communicated to all stakeholders that we will do the same in all the markets until the virus is contained,’ Kunje said.

A vendor that we met in a company of a few friends George Salim, acknowledged the need for compliance on measures meant to control the spread of the virus, but was quick to lament that the situation has caused an economic strain among the vendors.

“We have heard about coronavirus. We know the risks coming with it but as much as it is crucial to comply with measures that have been put in place to control its spread, it is sad that businesses have been affected, and so with our families,” Salim said.

Government recently outlined measures aimed at preventing the spread of coronavirus.
