Myths Contributing to Defilement Cases in Ntchisi

Police in Ntchisi say defilement cases are on the increase in the district and investigations are indicating that most of these cases are resulting from myths and beliefs.

According to the police, from 2019 last year to date, 13 cases have been recorded from various areas in the district and the cases have only been reduced with 2 since in 2019 during the same period 15 cases were recorded.

Ntchisi police publicist, sub inspector Richard Kaponda has told Zodiak online that they investigations have revealed that many children in the district are being abused this way because the perpetrators still believe that by defiling a young girl they will be cured from HIV and AIDS or they will get rich.

"Some people are still defiling girls because they want to get rich and others be cured from HIV and AIDS but as police we are sensitizing communities that these are just myths", He said.

This is coming barely a few days after Ntchisi first grade magistrate also expressed worry with increase in number of cases they are handling every month despite stiff punishments being given to perpetrators.
