Gvt Launches K600 Million Grading Programme on Selected Roads in CR

Minister of transport and public works, Ralph Juma says grading public road networks is very important as the roads increase access to markets of agricultural produce mainly this time when people are harvesting.

Apart from increasing access to markets, Juma said the rural roads will help locals with access to health facilities and other social amenities.

"As government we want to see to it that people have easy access to markets especially this time when people are harvesting farm produce but also have access to health facilities and other social amenities " Juma said.

He said this Monday in Dowa during launch of grading programme on selected roads in the central region.

In his remarks, Member of Parliament for Dowa West Constituency, Abel Kayembe has asked government to consider also constructing some structures such as drainage systems of the roads in order to avoid erosion of the roads during rainy season.

"We are very grateful for the programme but we are also asking government to consider constructing drainage systems of the roads to avoid erosion of the roads during rainy season," Kayembe said.

Dowa District Commissioner, Alex Mdooko told Zodiak Online that the grading of the rural roads in Dowa is an exciting news to the farmers as they produce different farming commodities in central region hence the roads will increase access to markets.

"The grading programme of the rural roads will help farmers in Dowa with access to markets of their farm produce as you know Dowa is a farming district" he said.

The grading programme of the rural roads is being financed by Roads Fund Administration through fuel levy at a total cost of K636 million.

In the central region, over 1400 kilometers of the roads will be graded from 7th April to 6th July this year
