Second Agricultural Production Estimates Ready This Month

Ministry of Agriculture says currently it is finalizing consolidation of data collected from all the districts for the 2019/2020 second round of crop estimates.

Spokesperson for the Ministry, Priscila Mateyu told Zodiak Online that while Malawians await the release of the second round of crop estimates this month, smallholder farmers must exercise caution when selling their produce.

"We are in harvesting period and farmers must exercise caution to keep some and if they intend to sell part of their produce, we recommend they sell at the Agricultural Development and Marketing Coporation (ADMARC)," she said

Mateyu says government will be buying such produce at a better price once markets open on Thursday.

The first round of crop estimates released in February showed an increase in maize production by about 9% compared to the 2018-2019 season.

The final round expected to be conducted in May will determine if Malawi will be food secure or not both at household and national level.
