Villagers Bemoan Shortage of Boreholes Amid COVID-19 Prevention

Villagers who have problems in accessing clean water in some hard to reach areas in Ntchisi district bemoan lack of useful information and support on prevention of COVID-19.

In the area of traditional authority Chilooko, T/A Chilooko says many villages in his area struggle to get water from one borehole and since people there have not yet been provided with preventive information and necessary support, these places could be hotspots for the virus.

Chilooko says apart from majority of people in his area being poor and not able to afford even soap and sanitizers for prevention of coronavirus, his worry is that many villages are exposed because of shortage of boreholes.

Solomon Mbewe Monitor and evaluation officer for Ntchisi district council has admitted to the challenges many people are facing in the area but says the council will start addressing them with support they are receiving from government and some development partners.

Meanwhile, Farmers Union of Malawi has donated various materials such as buckets and sanitizers, among others worth 1.7 Million Kwacha to Ntchisi district council in particular the area of traditional authority Chilooko in response to the COVID-19.

Chairperson for Farmers Union in Ntchisi district Gerlad Mafosa says the organization stands ready to help the district on the fight against COVID-19.
