CCJP Cautions MEC on Reports of Registration of Minors in Voters Roll

In a statement, National Coordinator for Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace, Boniface Chibwana says his Organisation has observed that NRB officers were not present in some centres during the first phase of voter registration.

Chibwana says prospective voters in some centres in Karonga, Chitipa and Dedza were discouraged and did not register as a result.

The commission has alleged that some politicians were encouraging minors to register in the voter’s roll after getting registered with NRB.

In addition, CCJP has observed that civic and voter education has not been enough in the first and second phases of voter registration.

"We have verified reports of the illegal phenomena in Dedza and Chikwawa where minors also registered during first phase of voter registration," Chibwana said.

MEC's director of Media and Public Relations, Sangwani Mwafulirwa is of the view that registration system is automated and cannot register a minor.

"MEC's registration system is automated and no one whose identification shows is a minor can be registered," Mwafulirwa said.
