Save the Children Commit $800M For Covid-19 Response in Malawi

Save the Children says it has committed 800, 000 United States Dollars which is about 600 Million Kwacha to six districts in responding to children interventions in the wake of Covid-19.

The Organization's Area Operations Manager for Southern and Eastern Regions, Thokozani Bhema told Zodiak Online Monday in Ntcheu that 62,100 children will be reached in the targeted districts of Ntcheu, Mzimba, Neno, Phalombe, Mwanza and Zomba respectively.

"When disasters hit like the case with Covid-19 children are always vulnerable," he said, adding that the funds will likely increase.

Bhema said this Monday in Ntcheu where the organization provided the district health office with Personal Protective Equipment and Infection Prevention materials to fight spread of the pandemic in the district.

Ntcheu District Council Director of Health and Social Services Dr. Isaac Mbingwani has repeatedly called on stakeholders to support the district with equipment to effectively respond to the disease.

"The district has a population of over 600, 000 people and a total of 39 health facilities hence the need for more supply of equipment to effectively respond," he said.

Meanwhile, Ntcheu district Commissioner, Dr. Smart Gwedemula says there is now collective cross-border response between the district and neighboring Mozambique in the wake of the disease.

Malawi has so far registered 41 Covid-19 cases with three deaths.
