On June 7, 2020 the media fraternity was saddened with the passing of veteran Journalist Dr Tikhala Chibwana. He was a man that championed the promotion of the media industry particularly mentoring women to take up leadership positions not only in Malawi but in Africa as a whole.

Until his death he was the Director of WAN-INFRA, Women in News in Africa. On Monday women across Africa, that have been mentored by Dr Chibwana, took some time to share their experiences and the great memories they shall remember Dr Chibwana by.

The WAN-INFRA memorial was held Via Zoom Monday afternoon.

From Kenya Queenter Mbori who was the first president for the Standard Group Women Network, said she would never forget the impact Dr Chibwana had on her life and many other Kenyan female journalists throughout the time they were undergoing the Women in News training.

“He was a leader who wore many hats…He had a soft spot for progression of women in media,” said Mbori. She added even though Dr Chibwana has passed on, his melody will linger on.

Popularly known as ‘Dr T” among the female journalists he trained, Dr Chibwana travelled to many countries leading initiatives aimed at promoting women in media and efforts to bring to an end cases of sexual abuse in the newsroom.

Hope Mafaranga shared how she decided to stop referring to Dr T as Sir or mentor after realizing how much of a father figure he had become.

She said “Dr T had a large family and a heart of gold. He had such a sweet personality."

For Malawi WIN alumni and coach Limbikani Kamlogera Dr T would forever be remembered as a calm and wise leader.

Media professionals across Africa continue to share how Dr Tikhala Chibwana impacted their life with most saying the world has lost a humble, wise, caring and respectable Man.
