MEC chairman Dr. Chifundo Kachale said treasury made the commitment after multi-stakeholder discussion involving his commission, chairpersons of several committees of parliament, finance minister Joseph Mwanaamvekha, Budget Director and the Reserve Bank Governor, among other stakeholders.

Dr. Kachale disclosed that minister Mwanaamvekha had reservations with release of funds fearing that the proposed means would disrupt government business.

Eventually, however, it was resolved that the funds be released for the MEC to be able to execute its functions as ordered by the Constitutional Court.

Kachale generally feels all is on course ahead of the fresh presidential election slated for Tuesday June 23 although a K10bn is still short on the MEC budget.

He said ballots are expected in from the printers in Dubai-UAE-around mid-day Friday and shall be taken straight to districts for all the 5002 polling centres.

During the press briefing, judge Kachale disclosed that he was only with three commissioners facing the media because the others had received court summons they needed to urgently attend to within seven days connected to their appointment.

Meanwhile, it has been made public, the United Nations has made available trucks for the MEC to use given the shortfalls in that area at the moment.

On a request by the Human Rights Defenders Coalition-HRDC-for MEC to move the national tally centre to Lilongwe from Blantyre, judge Kachale said given the available time to the election and the tasks before them, that is not a priority issue.
