A total of 44 cases were brought before the courts after the May 21, 2019, tripartite elections. These included two, one each by Dr. Lazarus Chakwera and Dr. Saulos Chilima which were later consolidated.

However, as of today Wednesday, the judiciary files had two electoral matters remaining, both on disputed parliamentary elections.

Among the cases, MCP shadow MPs, Kafandikhale Mandevana of Nsanje Central, Enoch Chizuzu (Nsanje North) and Foster Thipiwa (Chikwawa East) are challenging the parliamentary election results in which Malawi Electoral Commission declared Francis Kasaila of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) (Nsanje Central), Ester Mcheka- Chilenje (Nsanje North, DPP) and Sam Khumbayiwa (United Democratic Front) in Chikwawa East as the winners.

Another case is involving Mangochi Monkey bay where MCP’s Gerald Kazembe is disputing victory of Ralph Jooma of the DPP.

Registrar of the High Court, Agness Patemba says all local government disputes that were brought before the courts were dismissed.

Among the matters concluded, the courts nullified the May 21 presidential election resulting in the June 23 fresh election and also nullified parliamentary election for Phalombe North and Mangochi West among others.
