The board’s public relations officer Zefelino Mitumba said this in Lilongwe on Wednesday when he awarded a whistleblower for alerting the board of illegal water connection, one of the things that the board is fighting in an effort to better serve people in its jurisdiction.

The whistleblower Linda Kachale, a professional social worker who has been awarded 100 thousand kwacha cheque, has since appealed to all Malawians to be responsible and desist from such acts as fraud, so that vulnerable families can benefit from public resources.

This is because of an arrangement the board CRWB has, which awards whistleblowers for tips on illegal water connections among others, so Kachale became one of the concerned citizens that reported this act of fraud.

Mitumba who represented the board’s CEO hailed Kachale for her patriotism, which he said saved money that will in turn support vulnerable communities.

“We know that our employees and customers engage in fraud and corrupt practices, illegal connections for example, which results in a 20 percent loss of the water we distribute. And financially, that translates into a lot of revenue lost,” said Mitumba.

Kachale has since appealed to Malawians to be responsible, and desist from such acts so that vulnerable communities can also benefit from public resources.

“I once witnessed people connecting water pipes fraudulently. And I remembered that Central Region Water Board is involved in corporate responsibility by assisting communities that are financially unstable in communities in the Central Region,” she said.

Central Region Water Board embarked on the initiative to generate revenue that is used to give back to communities in its jurisdiction.
