The department of immigration has blocked immediate-past chairperson of the Malawi Electoral Commission, Dr. Jane Ansah from exiting the country.

Dr. Ansah was driven to the border post with Zambia today where immigration officials could not let her past because she apparently required a not from the office of president and cabinet.

The Independence Day attempt to leave the country took place when the focus of the nation was on the inauguration of President Lazarus Chakwera which was taking place at the Malawi Defense headquarters at Kamuzu Barracks in the capital, Lilongwe.

Duty Officer for Mchinji border post, Superintendent Gladson Luhanga, told Zodiak Online that Dr. Ansah disclosed that she was on her way to the United Kingdom for a holiday and that she meant to fly out from an airport in Zambia.

“We had to alert our superiors for guidance because Dr. Ansah is no ordinary citizen. She is a public figure. So the advice we got was that we should not allow her to proceed.

“We were advised to request her to get clearance from the Office of the President and cabinet first,” said Superintendent Luhanga.

Dr. Ansah arrived at the border post around seven in the morning on Monday.

But for a good one and a half hours, she tried in vain to convince the immigration officers to let her through.

Luhanga said, “She eventually cooperated with us. She agreed to get back to Lilongwe for the clearance”.

Dr. Ansah, who is also a senior judge of the Supreme Court, was alone in the cheauffeur driven VX registration number MG 134 AK.

Dr. Ansah was chairperson of the MEC when the presidential election in the May 2019 tripartite election was nullified on account of systemic irregularities.

Fresh elections were held on June 23 under a new MEC chairmanship in which was delivered a new president, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, who was inaugurated today July 6.
