Hours after Justice Dr. Jane Ansah was sent back from the border post in Mchinji for lack of executive permission to exit the country into Zambia, immigration officials have, this morning, finally let the former chairperson of the Malawi Electoral Commission go on her trip to UK.

Dr. Ansah is travelling to Zambia to connect later next week on aflight to the United Kingdom.

She will be on holiday pending retirement as Supreme Court judge in October this year.

Officer in Charge for Mchinji Immigration Steve Chirambo confirmed the development saying Dr. Ansah produce a letter of approval from the Judiciary.

“After getting a node from our superiors, we allowed her proceed,” said Chirambo.

The department of immigration yesterday blocked Dr. Ansah from exiting the country because she required a nod from the judiciary for such travel.

The Independence Day attempt to leave the country took place when the focus of the nation was on the inauguration of President Lazarus Chakwera which was taking place at the Malawi Defense headquarters at Kamuzu Barracks in the capital, Lilongwe.

Duty Officer for Mchinji border post, Superintendent Gladson Luhanga, told Zodiak Online that Dr. Ansah disclosed that she was on her way to the United Kingdom for a holiday and that she meant to fly out from an airport in Zambia.

“We had to alert our superiors for guidance because Dr. Ansah is no ordinary citizen. She is a public figure. So the advice we got was that we should not allow her to proceed,” said Superintendent Luhanga Monday afternoon.

Dr. Ansah had spent a good one and a half hours talking to immigration for permission to exit but in vain.

Dr. Ansah was chairperson of the MEC when the presidential election in the May 2019 tripartite election was nullified on account of systemic irregularities.

Fresh elections were held on June 23 under a new MEC chairmanship in which was delivered a new president, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, who was inaugurated yesterday July 6.
