SKC Hits the Ground Running With Government Reforms Agenda

Chilima: Kick starts reforms agenda Chilima: Kick starts reforms agenda Pic Govt. Press Office

Vice president Saulos Chilima has begun holding interface meetings with heads of parastatals, private sector and local councils on the implementation of the Chakwera administration reforms agenda.

Chilima, who is also minister for economic planning and development, and private sector reforms begun the meetings in the capital, Lilongwe before going to Blantyre and later Mzuzu for the same.

It appears the first things he desires to see changed is punctuality among public officers as when he arrived for the meeting 10 minutes to scheduled starting time 9am, all who came late were sent back.

The conference was held at the Bingu International Convention Centre.

Chilima said the engagement with the heads of parastatals was to appreciate impact of public sector reforms in respective organizations before embarking on a new reform roadmap.

The vice president says he has since requested a reforms status report to be filed no later than 17th July.

“Once this is done, we will be engaging individual Parastatals on a quarterly basis to take stock of the gains to ensure that we improve on service delivery to benefit Malawians.

“During the engagement, I also noted that some Directors and Managers are on Acting Employment basis. They should immediately be reviewed for confirmation or removed,” Chilima said.

The vice president stresses that other than keep transferring CEOs in parastatal, it is better to remove those found to be incompetent as “they cannot become competent by simply moving to another parastatal.

“The take home message for everyone was that this is a new administration and as such they must not live in the past because doing so will be unnecessarily dangerous for their jobs. This is time to work hard,” he said.

The MCP-led Tonse alliance administration made public sector reforms a campaign agenda that it hopes to improve public service delivery in the time of its leadership.

Vice president Chilima has a private sector background following his leadership experience at Southern Bottlers Limited and Airtel Malawi where he was the Chief Executive Officer.

He is known to be a professional administrator.
