Government has cautioned Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) employees against being involved in acts of corruption, warning that anyone caught risks dismissal.

Minister of Energy Newton Kambala issued the warning during a familiarization tour of the MERA offices in Lilongwe on Wednesday.

Kambala also urged workers at the energy regulator to be efficient and transparent as energy is a key driver for economic growth.

“We have stipulated regulations on delivery of energy in Malawi which is monitored by MERA and I want MERA staff to make sure that these regulations are followed,” said Kambala.

“As everybody is aware that Malawi has been involved in corruption a lot which is denying Malawians infrastructure because of corrupt people and I would want to see MERA management stop this if it is happening,” added the Minister.

In his remarks, MERA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Collins Magalasi said the institution already has a zero-tolerance to corruption policy.

“We are a public institution and we use public resources, our doors are open and we are very pleased with the direction of the Minister, we will avoid corruption, we will resist corruption and we will report corruption, anybody who has a question is free to come to look at our books anytime,’’ said Dr. Magalasi.

MERA was established to regulate the energy sector and started its operations in 2008.

Among other duties, MERA sets and regulates fuel prices.
