Chakwera Reinstates Nundwe as MDF Commander

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has reinstated the fired Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Commander, General Vincent Nundwe.

Chakwera made the announcement at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe on Tuesday.

He said although the earlier decision was made with constitutional provision but it erred as it was improper to use such powers to dismiss Nundwe.

“General Nundwe has been redeployed as Commander of the MDF with immediate effect to reverse injustice to the military family,” said the President.

In March this year, immediate past President Peter Mutharika, fired General Vincent Nundwe as commander of the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) replacing him with General Peter Namathanga.

This he said was in line with section 4 of the Defence Force Act of 2018.

However, the development was widely viewed as punishment to General Nundwe for the MDF role in a series of anti-government demonstrations.

In a brief address to the Nation, Chakwera said the former President errored in the application of the law and that there were no enough reasons for such action.

He said bringing back General Nundwe will help heal the mounds he suffered at that time.

Nonetheless, President Chakwera did not say what will happen to General Nundwe's former deputy Clement Namangale.

He said he will soon convene a Defence Council meeting to facilitate the appointment of MDF deputy commander.

This means General Namathanga and his deputy Lieutenant General Davis Mtachi are out of the system having served for a period of 5 months, becoming the least serving MDF leaders. They now await their fate after MDF.
