Malawi Red Society Sounds SOS, Depletes 75% COVID19 Funds

The Malawi Red Cross Society says it has exhausted almost 75% of its funds meant for COVID-19 preparedness and response interventions set aside for 19 districts across the country.

The organization's Director of Programs and Development, Prisca Chisala told Zodiak Online Wednesday that with the pandemic's prevailing situation in the country, more resources are needed to continue responding to the pandemic.

She has since appealed for more financial support from partners as this threatens efforts to fight the pandemic.

"Our interventions started around March and reaching this far, we have exhausted almost 75% of the funds hence appealing to partners for more support," said Chisala.

She said the organization commits to working in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chisala was speaking in Ntcheu where the organization has been providing cash assistance to communities in the district under the livelihood component.

For a period of two months, selected beneficiaries have pocketed K15, 000 each per month.

Nason Chamgwera from Chipula Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Njolomole is a beneficiary and said the support has been timely.

"COVID-19 has ruined our livelihoods. We would like more support to at least overcome the effects," he said.

Since April 2020, Malawi has recorded over 5000 COVID-19 confirmed cases.
