Man,43, Fined MK1 Million for Stealing Gvt Drugs

The Ntcheu Senior Resident Magistrate Court has convicted and sentenced a 43-year-old man to pay a One Million Kwacha fine or in default serve a three-year jail term for stealing government medicines.

Ntcheu Police Station Spokesperson, Hastings Chigalu told Zodiak Online today Monday that the convict Geoffrey Zamajaya was working as a Volunteer Expert Client at Kasinje Health Centre.

"Police acted on a tip-off to arrest the convict and found with 70 bottles of ARV tablets, 11 Viral loads HIV Testing Kit, 40 pieces of medical apron and one medical tape, all property of Malawi Government," he said.

He said appearing before court, the accused pleaded guilty to the charges leveled against him.

In mitigation, Zamajaya pleaded with court for leniency saying he was asthmatic besides being married with six children and looking after three orphans.

However, Police Prosecutor, Samie Liwonde, prayed for stiffer punishment citing a lack of essential drugs in government health facilities.

Passing the sentence, Senior Resident Magistrate Yohane Munthali, conquered with the state saying the offense was serious in nature and attracts a maximum fine of 20 Million Malawi Kwacha and 20 years imprisonment with hard labor.

Geoffrey Zamajaya hails from Kasinje village, Trading Authority Ganya in the district.
