This is one of the measures of controlling a surge in motorcycle accidents that have been registered this far.
Homeland Security Minister, Richard Chimwendo Banda says the increase by 39 percent increase in accidents involving motorcyclists has compelled government to effect the new regulations.
Chimwendo Banda further said operators without necessary documentation will not be allowed to operate on the roads of Malawi
“There has been a 39 percent increase in road accidents with over 800 registered in 2019 alone. Through our findings, it is clear that most of these accidents happen during the night and the only way to deal with this is to impose measures that will see that operating time for these motorcycle taxi operators is regulated.”
Some three months ago, government gave the motorcycle operators 2 months to complete all traffic regulations.
The operators however protested the decision asking for 6 months.
