Malawi Ready For Another Wave of COVID-19

In a bid to contain another wave of Covid-19 pandemic in Malawi, Government has ordered that all indoor gatherings must be half the capacity.

Minister of Health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda told Journalists in Lilongwe on Friday, that all people attending outdoor gatherings must observe social distancing and also wear face masks.

"Suppose we are hit with another wave of the pandemic. We don’t want to panic in protecting the people”, said Chiponda.

The events include religious and other social gatherings, weddings among others.

The Presidential Committee on Covid-19 is reacting to the resurfacing of the pandemic in some countries that poses threat of another wave of the virus in Malawi.

Minister of Information Gospel Kazako has advised organizers of various functions to follow and observe the set standards adding that they will be gazetted in countries laws

Said Kazako, "we will be monitoring the situation, and if it worsens more strict measures will follow.”

Meanwhile, Malawi has sourced 60,000 testing kits and according to the Presidential Committee on Covid-19, they are enough for now.

As of Friday, Malawi had registered the highest number of recoveries since the first case of Covid-19 was registered. They rose to 523.

Since the first case, 5,885 people had tested positive with 183 deaths.
