The cancellation of this year's Malawi School Certificate of Education examinations comes barely a week since the commencement of the examinations.

Minister of Education Agness Nyalonje announced this in Lilongwe Tuesday morning at a media briefing that was graced Malawi National Examination Board MANEB Board Chairperson Professor Al Mtenje, MANEB Executive Director, Gerald Chiunda and other key officials.

Nyalonje said the examinations will be administered from 9 March 2021 and that a proper timetable will be announced in due course.

"After a meeting by the Board of MANEB, there was an agreement that this year's examinations should be cancelled and that fresh examinations should be administered next year in March. It is unfortunate that government has to cough about 4.5 billion to finance the administration of the examinations."

Meanwhile, MANEB Executive Director, Gerald Chiunda while saying said investigations are still underway, the leakage of the examinations has cost the board about 4.5 billion kwacha which was used in shouldering all necessary costs.

"We have commenced investigations into the leaking of the exams and the outcome is going to help us in the future administration of examinations."

MSCE examinations were previously canceled in 2000 and later in 2007. The cancellation this year follows the leakage of about 6 papers on social media.
