UNAIDS Country Director Nuha Ceesay says despite Malawi making strides in responding to HIV and Aids, there is a need to allow all Malawians access medical care in public hospitals.

“We should stop judging others. If we want to defeat, HIV and Aids in the country let's proving equal footing in the provision of medical services,” observed Ceesay.

Latest statistics show that around 7 percent of men who have sex with men in Malawi are living with HIV. Although HIV prevalence tends to be higher in older men, a study published in 2017 found 11.8 percent of 18-to 19-year-old men who have sex with men were already living with HIV.

Principal Secretary in the Ministry Health, Dr. Charles Mwansambo has acknowledged calls by the UN saying Malawi is already doing something to ensure that the key population is not side-lined in HIV and Aids, activities.

Said Dr. Mwansambo: “We are doing good as a country. But are coming up with a strategy that will ensure all people have access to medical health in Malawi.”

Malawi has 33,000 new HIV infections and the reproductive ages ranging from 15 to 49 being the worst hit.

And 1.1 million people are living with the virus in Malawi.
