Fisherman,29, Arrested For Allegedly Killing His 3yr-Old Step Son

A 29-year-old fisherman has been arrested in Kasungu for allegedly killing his 3-year-old stepson during a marital dispute when his mother refused to offer him for ritual purposes.

Kasungu Police Assistant spokesperson, Sergeant Miracle Mkozi has identified the deceased as Kelvin Phiri.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at Mtambalala village in the area of Chief Kaomba.

The deceased's mother Eluby Kasowa told police that she got married to the suspect, Medi Siyati in August, this year.

But the suspect allegedly "started requesting his wife to offer his 3-year-old step son for rituals in order to be catching more fish. The wife did not agree with the idea instead she sent her son to his grandparents."

Nkozi says after some days the suspect apologized to his wife and requested her to bring back his step son to the house.

"On November 29, 2020, the suspect brought back the issue of rituals to his wife and this did not go well with the wife who confronted the suspect on his claim."

Police suspect Siyati intentionally stepped on his 3-year-old step son who was asleep until he became unconscious while assaulting his mother.

The boy was pronounced dead at Kasungu District Hospital where the mother had taken him for treatment.

"Postmortem conducted revealed that death was due to head injuries," said Mkozi.

The suspect has been charged with murder and will appear before court soon.

Medi Siyati hails from Kalemba village,Traditiony Authority Kalemba in Balaka .
