Executive Director for the Foundation, Samuel Chigamba told Zodiak Online Tuesday in Ntcheu at a Local Disability Day Commemoration that lack of awareness on the same has resulted in increased stigma and discrimination towards people with disabilities.

"A lot of people with Epilepsy like any other people with disabilities have for a quite long time vindicated due to their disability. It is high time stakeholders take a role in popularizing all forms of disabilities to address problems people with disabilities face," he said.

While conceding the issue at hand, Ntcheu Central Constituency Legislator, Dr. Albert Mbawala has committed to lobby fellow legislators in parliament for policies that will in long run promote and protect rights of people with disabilities.

"People with disabilities are like any other citizen. Being duty bearers, we have a responsibility to come up with legislation to ease the sufferings," he said.

Meanwhile, International Charity organization SightSavers under its inclusive early childhood development project which is targeting 49 Community Based Child Care Centres in Ntcheu said disability inclusiveness remains a problem and is denying children with disabilities right to education.

SightSavers Project Coordinator, Ben Chikaipa said it is high time communities and duty bearers are in forefront of promoting rights for children with various degrees of disabilities.

A latest survey by the Centre for Social Research says 500, 000 people have epilepsy in the country.
