LL-Based Nurse Gets First NASME Motivation Award in Honey Processing

Realizing the demand and need to maintain standards for honey processing, National Association of Small and Medium Enterprise NASME has offered the first motivational award to a Lilongwe-based lady processor Anne-Marie Chiphwanya.

NASME national executive director Willian Mwale told Zodiak Online that this is a new motivation award to women entrepreneurs among many that the organization has been conferring to women as an encouragement to grow their business.

“We introduced the awards in 2018 following an advice from SADC (Southern Africa Development Community) and ministry of Trade and Industry that we recognize entrepreneurs that are doing well as a way of motivating them to continue,” explained Mwale.

The concept according to Mwale has helped to rope in more entrepreneurs to work for quality beyond just staying in business to earn a living by producing products for local and export markets.

“And this time we looked at honey processing which is fast becoming common considering the demand on the local and international market,” Mwale said.

He added, “we visited her farm in Mpingu in Lilongwe and the place she uses to process honey. The products and honey she is doing come out to be unique so we want her place to be a center of excellence for honey processing.”

Chiphwanya confessed it never crossed her mind that she would get such recognition for the agri-business she ventured into to complement her profession as a nurse.

“I started bee-keeping two years ago after attending a training on watermelons I was planting. I was advised that bees help facilitate pollination of flowers for the plants and eventually been keeping and honey processing has turned out to be a viable agribusiness for me as a nurse,” she said.

Besides boosting production of quality products, 2019 recipient of NASME motivation awards Lucy Mandala affirms that they also help connect entrepreneurs to Malawi Bureau of Standards for certification of products, easy access to markets, and prospective financiers to grow the business.
