Botswana based Brainpower Foundation and local based Seed for Life (S4L) have made available a donation of 12, 000 textbooks to six schools in Ntcheu district.

These schools are Madzanje, Malonda, Nsipe and Nthumbi day secondary schools as well as Bangala and Bemvu primary schools.

Brainpower Foundation Chief Executive Officer, Tina Chalira-Hasib told Zodiak Online that the donation is aimed at reducing pupil-book ratio; thereby increasing reading culture.

"One of the benefiting schools, Bemvu Primary is where my father went to. As one way of thanking the school, a donation of textbooks was ideal besides enhancing reading culture among learners in surrounding schools," said Chalira-Hasib.

Chalira-Hasib said her organisation, currently focusing on health and education, is determined to expand its charitable works across the country.

Nthumbi Community Day Secondary School Head Teacher, Lameck Dick, said the donation was timely but a lack of library at the school is a challenge.

"Insufficient of textbooks remain a concern at our school as many students scramble to access books for their academic purposes; hence, affecting students’ performance in class," he said.

Seed for Life (S4L) through its Chairman, Kenenth Chalira, has also donated cartons of soap to the six schools to enhance sanitation and hygiene during this period of COVID-19.

Among the donated textbooks include; Literature, History, Geography, Science and Technology and Religion books.

The two charity organisations sourced the textbooks in the United States of America.
