NGO Pleads With Fishermen To Avoid Illegal Fishing
An Organization called Refresh has pleaded with fishermen in the country to avoid using illegal fishing gears and chemicals on lake Malawi.
Technician for Refresh in Dedza Catherine Kamanga told Zodiak Online that some substances which fishermen pour into the lake kill small fish and illegal gears affect fish bleeding.
"With funding from USAID, we are implementing a project called restoring fisheries for sustainable livelihoods in Lake Malawi. "
"We are training fishermen to be independent and adopt best fishing practices," said Kamanga.
She has also pleaded with fishermen to construct toilets along the lake and make sure women are not washing nappies there.
Chairperson for Fisheries Association in Dedza Mr. Leaonard Selevasi and Chairperson of Fisheries Association in Mangochi Mr. Shadreck Mphande has commended refresh for the project it is implementing in the 2 districts saying they are learning a lot as fishermen.
