The campaign by Malawi Revenue Authority to have tax-payers registered on Msonkho Online has roped in 20% of taxpayers on Know Your Customer data.

MRA’s Head of Corporate Affairs Steven Kapoloma told Zodiak Online that the system has since been rolled out in all its stations across the country, giving tax-payers the opportunity to minimize physical meetings and trips to MRA offices for tax registration and submission of tax documents.

The Authority is implementing Msonkho Online to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in tax compliance and taxpayer service management by improving and automating business processes in the Domestic Taxes Division.

“The online platform was initially piloted in Blantyre and Mzuzu stations but now it has been rolled out in all the stations,” he said.

Taxpayers are privileged to access a range of tax services using a then online platform such as register for tax, file tax returns, or pay taxes.

According to Kapoloma, Tax-payers that did KYC are being implored to register on the platform and so far, 20% of the 18, 000 tax-payers that did KYC have registered on the portal.

“We want 100% of the taxpayers to be on the platform because soon we will be talking of e-filing and they will be left out.”

He said it is relatively exciting to see more and more people coming forward and the authority is making efforts to increase the reach although some are suspicious when contacted thinking it is some crooks trying to dupe them.

According to design, the system manages a range of domestic and international trade taxes, including Income Tax, Value Added Tax, Withholding Tax, Fringe Benefits Tax, Provisional Tax, Turnover Tax, and Pay-As-You-Earn (PAYE).
