Road Tolling To Start Mid July 2021 - RFA
The Roads Fund Administration (RFA) is optimistic the country will start road tolling system in July 2021 as construction of a 2 billion Kwacha Chingeni Toll Plaza in Ntcheu nears completion.
RFA Board Chairperson, Kester Kaphaizi told Zodiak Online today in Ntcheu that at the moment, RFA is managing to fund at least 50% of road maintenance projects hence road tolling will help to cover the deficit.
"RFA currently relies on revenue collected from fuel levy to fund road maintenances and rehabilitation. The money is insufficient as we only fund at least 50% towards the same," Kaphaizi said.
He said once road tolling commences, revenue collection will be enhanced.
Meanwhile, Inkosi ya Makhosi Gomani V of Ntcheu has described the project as a milestone to development besides creating job opportunities for surrounding communities.
"The infrastructure project is timely as it will propel development beside job creation among surrounding communities. We will sensitize locals for its sustainability," said Gomani V.
The Chingeni Toll Plaza Project which commenced in July 2020 was expected to complete by December 2020.
However, due to Covid-19 travel restrictions among other challenges the project has delayed hence extended to the June 2021 deadline.
