For over two decades now the Malawi Electoral Commission has not conducted any constituency demarcations despite this being one of its’ several constitutional mandates.

But now, the MEC has begun the exercise to comply with the constitutional dictation in the country.

And as part of the process, MEC engaged media managers to appraise them on the need for them to disseminate the right information.

MEC Chairperson, Dr. Chifundo Kachale, says the exercise is politically sensitive hence the need for the media houses to help in educating the masses.

“The exercise will in some instances lead to leaders losing their seats hence the need for proper dissemination of information about the exercise.

This would help in the smooth running of the exercise,” said Dr. Kachale.

Nation Publications Limited NPL Editor, Aubrey Mchulu called on media houses to properly highlight to the masses about the exercise.

“As the MEC Chairperson has put it, the exercise will see an increase in constituencies, a thing which will require media to properly highlight,' said Mchulu.

The exercise is expected to cost 1.5 billion kwacha and the treasury has made available MK500 million kwacha and the rest will be made available in the upcoming national budget.

Constituency demarcations are required to be conducted every after five years to ensure that demographics represent near-equal voters during elections which at the moment stands at 50, 000.

Malawi held the last constituency demarcation exercise in 1998 when the number of constituencies increased to the current 193 from 177.
