Police Officers From Presidential Event Survive Road Accident

Two police officers sustained serious degrees of injuries while five others escaped with minor injuries yesterday in a road accident involving a police vehicle on the Nkhotakota-Kasungu-Nkhufi road near Bauti trading Centre in Nkhotakota.

The seven officers were returning to Kasungu from Nkhotakota where they were deployed to provide security at the 2021 commemoration of International Albinism Awareness Day at Chigumula ground where President Lazarus Chakwera was the guest of honour.

Central East Region Police Spokesperson Harry Namwaza told Zodiak that the vehicle lost balance and overturned when the front left tire got detached as it was in motion.

“Two of our officers have been injured in a road accident involving our Toyota Land Cruiser registration number MP 2111 as they were returning to Kasungu from a Presidential function in Nkhotakota,” Namanza said.

Without providing further details of the officers, Namwanza added the officers were admitted to Kasungu District Hospital.

“The officers are now in a stable condition and we are able to speak to them. Doctors are still assessing them to ascertain the extent of the injuries.”

This accident comes barely a month after two Malawi Defence Force (MDF) military police officers on President Chakwera’s escort died in a road accident in Blantyre.

They were aboard an MDF military police Toyota Land cruiser alongside other officers who also sustained various degrees of injuries.
