Road Accident Claims a Life; Injures 13

One person has died while 13 others have sustained serious degrees of injuries when a vehicle, they were travelling in, to a football match in Nkhata-Bay from Dwangwa in Nkhotakota, overturned at Mlowe in Nkhata-Bay.

Nkhata-Bay police station spokesperson Kondwani James told Zodiak online that the vehicle, a three-toner lorry, had 47 passengers on board.

On arrival at Mlowe Trading Centre, James said the driver failed to negotiate a corner and lost control of the vehicle causing it to swerve and overturn.

James identified the deceased as 17-year-old Yosefe Chirwa.

“The accident occurred yesterday (Sunday) at Mlowe Trading Centre here in Nkhata-Bay, it involved a three-toner lorry registration number DZ6782 driven by Chimwemwe Mkandawire.”

“Following the impact, one person died and 13 others sustain serious injuries,” said James.

The injured 13 people are admitted to Nkhata-Bay District Hospital. The other people escaped with minor injuries and were treated as outpatients.
