MDF Soldier Dies During Airborne Training

A Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldier has died following a hard landing when his parachute allegedly failed to launch as he jumped from an aircraft during a basic airborne course at Parachute Battalion in Salima.

MDF Acting Spokesperson Major Emmanuel Kelvin Mlelemba has confirmed that No. 20091 Private Christopher Sadik from Cobbe Barracks in Zomba died around noon on Tuesday.

“We have lost private Christopher Sadik of 1 Malawi Riffles during a basic airborne course.

They were conducting what are called qualifying jumps and unfortunately there was a hard landing which resulted in his death” Said Major Mlelemba.

Sources inside MDF say the soldiers were doing the final exercise of their course before the pass-out ceremony.

They were jumping from an MDF Donier 228 aircraft at an airfield near Parachute Batallion in Salima.

Remains of Private Sadik have since been taken to his unit in Zomba before burial on a day to be announced according to Major Mlelemba.

“The body is now in Zomba and we will communicate on burial arrangements after consultations with the bereaved family.”

Private Sadik hailed from Chinangwa Village Traditional Authority Mwambo in Zomba.
