The ministry’s spokesperson Adrian Chikumbe says day’s report by the presidential task force is a result and reflection of the extent of the problem, which has resulted in high registration of cases across the country.

25 people succumbed to Covid-19 disease, while 785 tested positive, attributing the rise of the disease to seeking medical attention at health facilities late, and at times, taking to hospital dead bodies.

“Many people seek medical attention late, they opt for homemade remedies, as well as purchasing medicines at drug stores, instead of seeking proper medical assistance at hospitals,” Chitimbe said.

He added, “Furthermore, myths and beliefs surrounding the pandemic are actually leading to this unfortunate development. And we do not know whether those advising them to take the remedies have any know-how, including the amounts of medicines to take while at home.”

Reacting to the report, a health expert Dr. Precious Makiyi says as much as using homemade medicines is helping, it does not cure the disease, hence the need to seek proper medication at the hospital.

“There is a need to change people’s mindset on these issues. There is a need for people to start trusting health facilities again so that they can go there and receive proper medication for their illnesses”, said Dr. Makiyi.

Some Malawians have been using blue gum tree leaves and lemons among others, to treat symptoms of the disease.

On Thursday, the country registered the record number of cases and deaths since the country started administering the vaccine, which is also out of stock now.
